Tina Fletcher takes Hickstead’s Derby crown

British Showjumper, 46-year-old Tina Fletcher has won the Hickstead Derby, which is a British Showjumping equivalent of the Grand National. It has been Fletcher’s life-long ambition to win and she is the first woman to claim the title since 1973 when Alison Dawes and Mr Banbury took the crown. Fletcher and Promised Land gave an outstanding performance, recording the only 53rd clear round since the event was first organised in 1961. Fletcher was very modest about her win: ‘I thought after last year I would never get the chance to win it, but the horse jumped fabulously. It’s all down to him.’ Last year she was beaten by Guy Williams and Skip Two Ramiro, whom collected eight faults this year and finished equal second with other riders. Fletcher is clearly ‘delighted and surprised’ with her great performance and win as she wanted to win the Hickstead Derby since she was a little girl. After being the runner-up 20 years ago and again last year, it shows great determination and skill from the rider to get this far.
