The horses of Pompeii
3 November 2010 | 0 Responses
The Roman city of Pompeii was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD and the city was buried under layers of volcanic ash which kept some human remains and part of some of the buildings preserved. Archaeologists also found five equid skeletons that were discovered in a stable that would have belonged to a rich Roman household of Pompeii. The bones were all thought to belong to horses, but after researchers examined the DNA sequence of these horses they found that one belonged to type of donkey. The DNA examined matched closest with domestic donkeys related to the Somali wild ass that is still found in Italy to this day.
