Not stopped by the volcano
Top eventer Oliver Townsend has been driving across Europe by taxi in an attempt to get to Kentucky for the Rolex Grand Slam.
If he wins the Rolex Grand Slam, he will win a £230,000 pay out. However, the recent cloud of volcanic ash caused major havoc with his travel plans to Kentucky.
Townsend did not allow this natural disaster to thwart his ambitions and set off from Shropshire last Sunday for the US. He said,” My entire career has been building up to moment like this. I am not going to let it slip away just because of a volcano in Iceland. I want to be there to represent Britain and this is the biggest moment of my career so far and the biggest event of the year.”
The tenacious rider has spent £1600 on a taxi to take from Paris to Madrid, where he is planning to catch a flight to the US. His horses which he will use for the event arrived there last week.
He added,” To be honest, I’m trying to see it as an adventure – this is where the Yorkshire grit kicks in.”
