Horse Welfare News

The FEI working group has introduced some diagrams illustrating head and neck positions which have been approved for pre and post training.

• Any head and neck position obtained through the use of aggressive force is not acceptable.

• Movements which involve having the horse’s head and neck carriage in a sustained or fixed position should only be performed for periods not exceeding approximately 10 minutes without change.

• Deliberate extreme flexions of the neck involving either high, low or lateral head carriages, should only be performed for very short periods.

If deliberate extreme flexions such as these are performed for longer periods the Steward will intervene and it’s their job to ensure that riders respect these procedures. Frank Kemperman Chair of the Working Group believes that these illustrations will ensure that Stewards are able to do their jobs more effectively. “These illustrations are the final piece of the jigsaw and will ensure that horse welfare is maintained at all times,” he says.
