Horse Dies in Palio race training
The eight-year-old bay, called Messi was fatally injured after ploughing into the barrier at a notoriously dangerous curve along the route.
The tragedy has fuelled the concerns of animal rights activists who are strong critics of the race, an event which has seen 50 horses died whilst on the route since 1970.
The Palio takes place in the Tuscan town of Siena and sees horses and bareback riders gallop around il Campo square.
Taking place twice a year the next race is set to take place tomorrow and despite the tragedy is still set to attract thousands of spectators.
