Horse and rider triumph at the Man V horse marathon

Posted on | 0 Responses

This year at the Man V horse marathon, Rider Llinos Mair Jones triumphed covering the picturesque run in 2 hours, 7 minutes and 4 seconds. The nearest human rival was Haggai Chetkwang, 40, of Clifton, Bristol who came in a close time of 2 hours, 17 minutes and 27 seconds.

The Man versus Horse Marathon is an annual race over 22 miles, where runners compete against riders on horseback. The race, which is not technically a marathon, as the route does not meet the requisite distance — takes place in the Welsh town of Llanwrtyd Wells every June. This year a field of 44 horses and riders took on 253 runner and 115 relay teams over a 22 mile course in Llanwrtyd Wells last week.

Gordon Green, the founder of the event, claims the only obstacle holding back the plan is a shortage of horses willing to take part.
He said that horses tire more quickly than human runners over distances and also have more difficulty keeping cool.
He had tried to put together a 44-mile race several years ago but could not then find enough horse riding competitors.
