Frightened horse takes a half mile swim in the English Channel
A horse was rescued by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution off the shore of Sandwich, Kent after it was spooked on the beach, threw off his rider and ran into the sea, swimming half a mile before he was finally recovered and brought back to safety.
The owner tried to run after the horse, but had to give up as he kept swimming further and further away from the shore into the English Channel.
The horse Shallimah had to be attached to a lifeboat by his bridle and coaxed back to the shore, where he was finally reunited with his distressed owner.
A witness to the event, Robert Smith, said: ‘It could have been so much worse. The horse was obviously a bit scared but he looked a lot better when he got out of the water. It was very dramatic but thankfully everyone is fine now.’
