Ear notching and tagging ban reiterated
Ear tagging was banned in 2007 when the Animal Welfare Act 2006 came into force. However, a television programme featured a pony farm in Wales where they still use this practice of mutilating ponies to enable the farmer to tell them apart. Footage of ponies with ear tags and notches cut into their ears was aired which prompted vets to reiterate that the ban must be enforced. Welfare organisation People4Ponies commented: ‘We were astonished to see the practice on Countryfile, but many farmers do not seem to be aware earmarking is illegal – hopefully, this will get the message through and we will see less of it.’
