UK and SA charities combine to alleviate equine suffering
A strategic partnership between the World Horse Welfare and the Highveld Horse Care Unit (HHCU) in South Africa has been struck up to try and alleviate equine suffering in the area.
It will focus on urgent work needed to improve the treatment of horses held in government pounds in the Kingdom of Lesotho, which is a small landlocked country surrounded by South Africa.
The HHCU is one of three horse care units in South Africa and has facilities to care for 30 horses at the unit, though frequently they have more than this as there are so many equines that require help.
Head of programme development at the World Horse Welfare Karen O'Malley said the charity's work in Lesotho in the last few has been very rewarding and it is pleased to now have the HHCU on board.
"By pooling our resources and skills, we are confident that we can achieve considerable improvements to the welfare of the horses housed in government pounds," she continued.
