Rare horse born at Chester Zoo
Visitors to Chester Zoo this month are in for a real treat as they will have the chance to see a newborn onager after it was born earlier on in June.
The onager is the rarest type of equine in the world and is an Asiatic wild ass that is a close relation to the donkey. It is native to the semi-desert regions of Iran.
This type of horse is classified as critically endangered by the International Union of Conservation as it is declining in huge numbers in its native country due to poaching and disease.
It is estimated that there are only 400 of them left in the wild but Chester Zoo is part of an international scheme and now has six onagers.
"Sadly, there is a very real possibility that they could become extinct in the wild. Constant conservation attention is required to secure the future of the species," Tim Rowlands of Chester Zoo said.
