The RSPCA has joined forces with PRP Rescue Services to run the first ever rescue horse or pony of the year competition.

It will get underway this week and there have so far been 48 entries received with 26 for the in-hand classes and 22 for the ridden categories.

The competition is being run alongside Equifest, which is taking place in Peterborough and attracts more than 10,000 entries in a number of different categories including show jumping and dressage.

Equifest will be running until August 15th, while the rescue horse or pony of the year will be held on Saturday (August 18th).

National equine coordinator for the RSPCA chief inspector Cathy Hyde said to receive nearly 50 entries for the first ever competition is encouraging.

"It's hoped that the RSPCA's presence at the show will highlight some of the heartbreaking equine welfare issues that we deal with and show that adopted horses go on to live happy lives," she continued.
