Government to improve horse dentistry
Horse insurance customers will be well aware of the importance of keeping their charges in good health, and dental hygiene is particularly important.
Some campaigners have raised concerns that the equine dentistry industry is in need of an overhaul to ensure high standards are maintained.
So it is no surprise that the Department for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) has launched a consultation into the future of horse welfare.
The government hopes that a shakeup of the industry will help to better define the roles of vets and technicians.
A Defra spokesperson told the BBC: "Horses need to have their teeth looked after to ensure their health and welfare.
"Veterinary surgeons perform most procedures but it's recognised that trained technicians can perform some less invasive dental procedures on horses."
In Europe, a new animal welfare law based on scientific evidence is being pursued. A move that is supported by the British Veterinary Association.
