Former Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and steeplechase giant Denman has been retired having received damage to his near fore tendon.

Equine insurance customers will remember fondly Denman's battles with Kauto Star in the Gold Cup having three times finished the race in second either side of triumphing finally in 2008 against his great rival.

The injury was suffered during his preparations for this month's Lexus Chase at Leopardstown (December 28th) however his trainer Paul Nicholls said it was with "great regret" that the legend had been retired.

BBC Sport's horse racing correspondent Cornelius Lysaght added: "Sadly, this retirement signals the beginning of the end of a truly golden era for British steeplechasing, with Kauto Star not a million miles away from making his own exit."

As well as triumphing at the 2008 Cheltenham Gold Cup, Denman landed the 2007 Lexus and the Hennessy Gold Cup in both 2007 and 2009.
