Further amendments made to whip rules
Equine insurance customers might be interested to learn that further amendments have been made to the controversial whip guidelines, with sanctions for breaches of the rules lessened.
Penalties for jockeys seemed to be excessively using their instrument will be reduced and stewards will now be able to use increased discretion and judge on a case-by-case basis.
The British Horse Authority statement suggested that the sport as a whole needs to cooperate in order to make the adjusted rules and be able to move forward with firm rules that promote both competitive racing and equine welfare.
However, the Professional Jockeys Association added about the adjustments: "The rules and penalties as amended are still too strict, and there will inevitably be more difficulties to overcome in the weeks and months ahead."
In reaction to the adjustments, the World Horse Welfare suggested it was a step backwards in the sport and the statement said the charity was "utterly dismayed" by the reductions made to penalties.
