A Derbyshire man is delighted after his beloved horse scooped top prize in one of the categories at the annual Horse of the Year show.

Held at the at the NEC in Birmingham, the event saw Woodhouse Calendar Girl named as the winner of the Shire Horse classification, the Ashbourne News Telegraph reports.

Martin Fountain, owner of the animal, was delighted with the outcome and revealed she has only ever been beaten once in a horse show.

"My family have been exhibiting shires at shows for years and years. It's such a thrill to enter a horse and have her win the competition," he added.

The Horse of the Year show is designed to act as a champions of champions-type event at the end of the equestrian season.

Mr Fountain has great hopes for Woodhouse Calendar Girl, as since she was a foal her class and quality has been obvious.
