Daily Mirror and Express in dressage picture mix up
The picture desks of both the Daily Mirror and the Daily Express made huge errors yesterday (August 8th) as they mistakenly put pictures of the Dutch dressage team into their papers instead of the British.
Both publications printed large pictures of the Dutch trio that finished third under headlines proclaiming them to be the gold medal-winning British team.
The Express has since apologised to the British Equestrian Federation and reprinted its front page with the correct image and its editor – Hugh Whittow – asked his apologies to be passed on to the riders.
Carl Hester, Laura Bechtolsheimer and Charlotte Dujardin's success was Team GB's 20th gold medal of the Games, which surpassed the amount that had been won in Beijing four years previous.
A mis-captioned agency picture has been blamed for the misjudgement but British Dressage's Winnie Murphy branded the coverage "offensive".
"You'd think they could tell the difference between read and orange. We dress our riders in beautiful red, white and blue uniforms – isn't that enough of a clue for them?" she said.
