Charity horse race to support excellent cause
19 June 2013 | 0 Responses
A group of 12 riders will take to York Racecourse this weekend to raise money for charity.
The twelve contestants have pledged to raise at least £2,500 for Macmillan cancer research through generous sponsors. This was a modest target and locals have gone in leaps and bounds to beat it. Currently the total stands at over £10,000!
Polly Marr, one of the amateur riders, told The York Press that the race was "a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I do ride, but I had never been on a racehorse before April".
The chance to race for a good cause has given Ms Marr a big confidence boost on the racetrack.
On June 21st, crowds and supporters will be out to watch the event and join in the fun of the day. A luxury auction is being organised to raise further funds for the charity, with prizes such as champagne, five-star hotel stays and even a trip to Hong Kong.
Let's hope it's sunshine for the jockeys who'll be riding nine furlongs.
