Badminton Horse Trials 2012 cancelled
The organisers of the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials have been forced to cancel the event due to the heavy rainfall seen up and down the country in recent weeks.
A statement issued by the officials this morning (April 30th) said that the "exceptional recent rainfall" has left the ground at Badminton totally waterlogged and partially flooded with little or no chance of recovering in time.
This is the first time that Badminton has been cancelled due to the adverse weather since 1987. It was also affected by the climate in 1975 and 1966, while the 1963 three-day event was shortened to a one-day competition because of adverse conditions.
Sponsors and riders alike will be refunded "as soon as practical" as well as exhibitors and spectators who bought advance tickets.
"Further rain is due this week leaving no chance of the ground drying out. Very sadly therefore the 2012 Mitsubishi Motors Badminton Horse Trials has been cancelled," the statement read.
