Wasps and Horses
When out riding in summer one of the most hazardous things to come across is a wasp’s nest. Some of these can be ground dwelling and off the beaten track so when riding in groups the first horse will disrupt the nest and the second and third horses will be engulfed in the swarm.
Horses usually do not want to move when they are stung and try and knock of the stinging insect, not a good idea when there are many more heading right for you.
A little vigilance is required so at the first sight of a swarm of wasps to quickly gallop away from the area before any injury can occur.
If your horse does get bitten, a few stings can be soothed with some cold water hosing or a little aloe vera gel, anything more severe or if the horse is having breathing difficulties then you should seek vet advice.
